Dohop has been nominated for the World Travel Awards for the third time in a row in the category of “World’s Leading Flight Comparison Website”. We actually won this award in 2014 and hopefully we can make it two years in a row. I guarantee that you are not as impressed as we are. Considering who we’re up against, this nomination is indeed impressive. We wrote about all the nominees in a different post, but to name a few, the giants are undoubtedly Kayak, Skyscanner, Momondo, and Hipmunk.
To get a better idea of what kind of companies we are up against, let’s take a look at Kayak. Almost 2 years ago, they were acquired by Priceline.com and were given a valuation of $ 1.8 billion. They are ranked 163rd largest website in the USA and are in the top 500 worldwide. Their marketing budget is many times the valuation of Dohop and they employ 10x more people. So, it’s safe to say that Kayak’s fire power is significantly bigger than Dohop’s. Looking at Skyscanner, Momondo, and Hipmunk will tell a similar story.
So what makes Dohop worthy of this prestigious award? To answer that question, we need to think about the most important aspect of a good flight comparison website. You guessed it; it’s all about being able to find people the cheapest flight tickets. This is something Dohop does better than most of its competitors.
From our humble beginnings in 2004, Dohop has approached the task of finding the cheapest flights differently than all other competitors. Instead of asking all vendors “what is the cheapest flight for this route and dates?”, Dohop first asks, “what are all the possible routes to get to this particular destination?”. After finding all the possible routes, Dohop will ask for prices for each leg of the trip. This technology is called “Self-Connect” and allows people to search for the cheapest flights, even if it means booking two separate tickets from different vendors. Few of Dohop’s competitors are able to do this and none can do it as well as Dohop.
Of course there are other things that Dohop does particularly well and there are things that our competitors do better than us. After all, there are a lot of factors that determine how good a flight comparison website is. Design, cool features, partnerships, speed, and other such factors are all important. However, when it comes down to it, a flight comparison website should focus on showing the most amount of prices – and the cheapest prices. If you don’t do that well, you will fall short, no matter how great you are at the other stuff.
Just like last year, when we sent Isabel Panitzsch Anguilla to accept the award on our behalf, we’re going to have some fun with this year’s nomination. The award ceremony is in Morocco and, since we get plenty of sun in Iceland anyway, we want to send a Dohop user to get the prize for us. Just send us a “selfie” and tell us why you want to go to Morocco, either here or on Facebook, and you’ll have a chance to win a free trip.
