The World Travel Awards aim to find and promote the very in travel and this year they shortlisted the following 11 travel apps for the awards “World’s Leading Travel App“. Is your favorite among the nominees?

Booking Now
Booking Now is Booking.com’s last-minute hotel-booking app. Using your location, Booking Now can find you a hotel near you that you can then book.
The focus is on last-minute hotel bookings, which are a surprisingly large market, if our own hotel booking info is anything to go by. After you book a hotel you will receive directions to your hotel, in-app, showing you clearly where the hotel is.
Reviews: 272 people have rated Booking Now, giving it an average of 4.2 stars.
ebookers
The ebookers app is a complete travel app; flights, hotels and rental cars, including package holidays. It is, in a sense, the ebookers website itself wrapped in an app.
Reviews: 5,522 people have rated the app, giving it the average rating of 4.1.
Expedia
Much like ebookers’ app, Expedia have wrapped the full functionality of their website into an app. Flight, hotels, rental cars and complete holiday packages can be purchased through the app, including travel alerts and mobile-only deals.
Reviews: a massive total of 60,370 people have rated Expedia’s app, giving it an average rating of 4.0.
Gogobot
Gogobot is a travel-planning app. It helps you set up and organize a trip by filling in activities and attractions with the possibility of then sharing the plan with your friends.
Gogobot has city-specific apps as well, for a number of big cities such as San Francisco, Paris and London. It is up to the user to chose whether they download and use the main app or go for city-specific apps.
Reviews: 3,583 reviews total, with the average score of 4.0 stars.
Lonely Planet Fast Talk
Lonely Planet Fast Talk (iPhone only) This is a phrasebook with Spanish, Italian, French and German phrases.
The app gives you access to hundreds of phrases spoken by natives in each language to help you as you travel. Additional languages are available as an in-app purchase.
Reviews: 19 total with an average rating of 4, though Apple say that the app hasn’t recieved enough ratings and reviews for an average score to be calculated.
Loungebuddy
LoungeBuddy is an airport-lounge app. It has information on more than 2,000 lounges in more than 600 of the busiest airports. LoungeBuddy allow you to add your credit cards and elite status you may have and then it informs you on what lounges you have access to.
Reviews: 264 reviews with an average rating of 3.9
Minube
Minube‘s app is a travel guide and, according to their ads, also organizes your photos after your trip so you can “relive the magic of traveling.”
You can use the app to plan a trip, starting from researching a particular type of trip you want to take, such as discovering port wine in Portugal. It also contains hotel and restaurant reviews, and lets you find and book a hotel.
Reviews: 16,744 reviews total for an average rating of 4.3.
Tripadvisor
TripAdvisor. Probably the best-known of tha apps nominated for the award. It is a continuation of their website, hotel and restaurant reviews by the millions along with the option to find and book flights and hotels.
You can use the “Near me” option to get recommendations for options near you, which might come in handy when you are in a new city.
Reviews: 634,978 reviews total for an average rating of 4.4. Highest-rated app so far.
TripIt
TripIt is a trip-planning app that creates a travel itinerary for you out of your confirmation emails. This happens automatically for gmail and Google Apps users.
They have a great explainer video. Really.
There is also a paid version of the app that includes real-time flight information and is ad-free (which means that the normal app includes ads. Which is not great).
Reviews: 34,979 people have reviewed the app giving it an average rating of 4.4 (tied with Tripadvisor).
Tripomatic
Tripomatic is a trip planner, similar to Gogobot. It lets you create an itinerary for cities; deciding what to see and when. It helps you by shpwing the weather forcast so you don’t plan outside activities during the rain, for example. Your plan syncs across all your devices and with an in-app purchase you can use the app offline (and avoid roaming charges).
Reviews: 1,945 reviews so far with an average rating of 3.8
Triposo
Triposo is a guide-app like Tripomatic and Gogobot, though it seems to take the guide part more seriously. The app comes with in-depth articles on the attractions you can visit and is available offline by default. Staying on-line will grant access to the weather forecast and information about attractions nearby.
Reviews: 4,731 people have reviewed Triposo and have given it an average rating of 4.4.
Our prediction
There are three apps that have a rating of 4.4; Triposo, TripIt and Tripadvisor. So the question is just which is the most useful and which has the most users, since these are useful indicators as to how many votes the app will get. Tripadvisor has the most users by far and also, on the face of it, seems like the most useful app.
It is also last year’s winner.
So our money is on Tripadvisor winning the award again this year.
