When you go abroad and rent a car, you are always a little nervous about driving, right? Will there be laws you don’t know about, do they drive on the same side of the road as you, what’s the deal with this roundabout and so forth.
Most of the time, of course, driving a rental car abroad is no problem. But then, you don’t often drive these roads. Take a look at the world’s most insane roads.
1. Tianmen Mountain Road, China
This is road leading up Tianmen Mountain in China. It is also reachable via an insane cable car ride.
2. Guoliang Tunnel, China
Buses and cars travel along the Guoliang Tunnel through the Wanxian Mountain in the Taihang Mountains in Huixian county, Xinxiang city, central China’s Henan province, 17 May 2014.
The wall of the tunnel is uneven and there are more than 30 “windows” of different sizes and shapes. Some windows are round and some are square, and they range from dozens of meters long to standard-window-size. It is frightening to look down from the windows, where strange rocks hanging form the sheer cliff above and a seemingly bottomless pit lying below.
3. Gotthard Pass, Switzerland
This mountain pass in Switzerland connects the German-speaking north to the Italian-speaking south, leading on to Milan.
4. Transfăgărășan, Romania
Romania — The Transfagarasan Pass Road, south of Sibiu
5. Zoji La, India
